UNICEF donors can either support specific programs in specific countries, or UNICEF in general, i.e. by making a non-specific donation.
Non-specific donations
UNICEF uses non-specific donations for
- program work based on defined indicators (e.g. child mortality, number of child workers, school enrollment rate);
- emergency aid where rapid and decisive action is needed;
- underfunded countries that are not necessarily favored by donors.
In the 2018 financial year, UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein passed on CHF 4.8 million to UNICEF in the form of non-specific donations.
Specific donations
In 2018, UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein passed on CHF 16.6 million from fundraising campaigns for specific projects in specific countries or for regional programs, and allocated CHF 1.9 million to programs in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
Fundraising at UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein
“Spend one franc to earn ten francs”: Fundraising involves spending money in order to further generate more money and help create a better world for children. UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, is funded entirely through voluntary contributions and does not receive any funding from the UN. This gives the organization strength and independence, and also makes it all the more important that fundraising efforts are effective, reputable and professional. UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein generates the majority of its donations through fundraising letters and telemarketing.
UNICEF ambassadors
UNICEF does not pay its ambassadors and spokespersons. They are only reimbursed for actual expenditure, such as travel expenses. In addition, freelancers are not paid any commission for organizing fundraising activities.
