UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein supports a program aimed at improving the protection and healthy development of child monks and nuns and other vulnerable children in Bhutan.

Many children in Brazil continue to be denied access to their right to education. 2.8 million children between the ages of 4 and 17 do not attend school because their families are too impoverished and they are often required to contribute to the family income from an early age.

After UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein achieved great success providing program support to combat female genital mutilation (FGM) in Guinea, the same approach is now being implemented in Sudan. This is because the proportion of girls and women in the north-east African country who have been subjected to FGM is also very high at 87 percent.

In India, millions of girls are at a disadvantage as soon as they are born. Their parents often struggle for daily survival, need every helping hand they can get around the house and in the fields, and try to marry off their daughters as quickly as possible.

In recent years, Rwanda has managed to get virtually all of its children to attend school. It has now become apparent, however, that students’ performance leaves a lot to be desired. The quality of teaching urgently needs to be improved.

Every day, more than 13,600 children under the age of five die worldwide. 47 percent of them do not even survive the first 28 days. Most of these premature deaths could be prevented by simple means such as breastfeeding, healthy food for mothers and infants, and medical care.
