«UNICEF stands in solidarity with, and is ready to support, children and families affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao on 8 June 2026, impacting communities in Sarangani Province, General Santos City, and nearby regions. We express our deep concern for their safety and well-being during this difficult time.
As classes resume, this emergency raises urgent concerns about children’s safety. Initial reports suggest minor injuries among some students, alongside damage to school buildings and other public facilities. The safety of learners and teachers must remain the top priority. Reports of fatalities, including children, are being monitored. Communities are urged to remain alert for possible aftershocks and follow official guidance, especially in coastal areas where tsunami risks may persist.
UNICEF is committed to support the Philippine government in responding to the needs of affected children and their families, particularly the most vulnerable. We have pre-positioned emergency supplies and multipurpose cash, enabling us to rapidly mobilize assistance to help provide timely and efficient access to cash transfers, quality health and nutrition services, water, sanitation and hygiene facilities and interventions, child protection services, and support for schools to maintain learning continuity during emergencies.
UNICEF is monitoring the situation closely and is coordinating with government and humanitarian partners to determine priority needs and response efforts. Together with our partners and supporters, we call on the authorities to ensure that affected children are protected from harm, disruption and distress, and that their rights remain at the centre of the response.»
