UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein, in collaboration with the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), conducted a survey on the current state of children’s and young people’s participation in planning and construction projects in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. From summer to fall 2025, all municipalities in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, as well as all cantons in Switzerland, were surveyed via
an online questionnaire about their experiences with the participation of children and young people, as well as about success factors and obstacles. In addition, qualitative interviews were conducted in the winter of 2025/2026 with representatives from ten municipalities in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
The study aimed to identify the factors that promote or hinder the participation of children and young people in planning and construction projects, and to determine the conditions necessary for successful, sustained participation. Recommendations for municipalities and cantons were derived from the results.
The study report contains detailed information on data collection and the results. It also provides an in-depth discussion and analysis of the findings.
The summary of the study report contains practical recommendations for municipalities and cantons, as well as for various stakeholders involved in the participation of children and young people in planning and construction projects.
