Crisis in Afghanistan

Weakened by multiple crises, people in Afghanistan are fighting for survival every day. More than half of the population needs urgent help, including 12 million children. Natural disasters, such as the severe earthquake on the night of September 1, 2025, further exacerbate the situation for local people.

The situation for children and families in Afghanistan has been dire for many years. This state of affairs has deteriorated significantly since the Taliban came to power in 2021. Women and girls have by now been almost completely excluded from public life. Conflicts, disease, hunger and natural disasters make this country one of the most dangerous places for children.

Afghanistan is one of the countries in the world most severely threatened by climate change. Earthquakes, flooding and other natural disasters regularly plague the region. Ongoing periods of drought are also destroying most of the harvests. People are going hungry everywhere in the country, including 857,000 children under five years who suffer from severe acute malnutrition. Furthermore, fifty percent of the population does not have access to clean drinking water, which increases the risk of outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and other diarrheal diseases.

UNICEF has been working in Afghanistan for over 75 years, providing lifesaving aid. Despite the fragile security situation, we do not want this to change. Even now, we remain on the ground with the people in Afghanistan. Because they need us now more urgently than ever.

We are staying. For every child.

Your help goes directly to Afghanistan:

We are further stocking up on emergency supplies in various locations throughout the country, including supplies for the autumn and winter months such as warm clothing and weatherproof tents.

Refugee girls and boys have a safe place to play at the child-friendly spaces created in some emergency camps.
