A severe earthquake has struck Venezuela. While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, urgent attention is focused on the rapid protection of children and their families in the affected areas.

UNICEF is already on the ground and prepared to support affected children and families with lifesaving assistance.

As the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF has decades of global experience in responding to natural disasters and humanitarian crises.

How does UNICEF help in Venezuela?

UNICEF has been working in Venezuela for many years and supports children and families in particularly vulnerable regions of the country. Assistance includes:

  • access to medical care for children, pregnant women and newborns
  • treatment and prevention of malnutrition
  • provision of safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation services
  • protection of children from violence, exploitation and neglect
  • psychosocial support for children and families
  • learning opportunities and support for schools and teachers
  • support with birth registration and identity documents
