Guide to children and young people’s participation

Municipalities, cities and neighbourhoods constitute the immediate living environment of children, and it is important that children are able to participate at this level. Participation is therefore also a central component of the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI).

But how can participation be successful? How can processes involving children be implemented? What needs to be considered to ensure that participation is meaningful for all those involved?

This guide provides step-by-step guidance through the implementation of the second phase of the process and highlights potential challenges. In addition, various supporting materials are available in the annex.

In principle, this guide is aimed at cities and municipalities that are undergoing the (re-)certification process as part of the Child Friendly Cities Initiative. However, it also offers valuable guidance and information for municipalities outside the initiative.
