The situation
On 26 August 2026, devastating flash floods hit the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading in northern Nepal. Communities along the Bhote Koshi River, near the Chinese border, have been hit especially hard – including Timure, Syaphrubesi and Rasuwagadhi. Around 50,000 people are affected – including 17,000 children. Homes, roads, bridges, and other vital infrastructure have been destroyed or severely damaged. Disrupted communication lines and blocked access roads are hampering relief efforts in the hardest-hit areas.
The death toll continues to rise, and more than a thousand people are still missing. Search and rescue operations are ongoing. With the threat of further flash floods, children and their families remain in grave danger.

UNICEF has been active in Nepal for more than 60 years and works in close coordination with local authorities. The Government of Nepal has asked UNICEF for support in health, nutrition and shelter. UNICEF teams are ready to respond immediately and are continuously assessing how children and their families can be supported where the need is most urgent.
