Symposium: Causes of and solutions to the increase in mental health problems among young people

24. May 2023, 09:30 - 16:50

The world appears to be in crisis mode. Even before the pandemic, anxiety disorders, depression and suicide were on the rise among young people worldwide. The pandemic further exacerbated the problem, with 15- to 25-year-olds in particular experiencing a serious deterioration in their mental health. This has led to increased public awareness of the issue.

The suffering of those affected and those around them, as well as the costs for health systems and the business world, are significant. Simply expanding the range of available treatments will not be enough to meet these challenges. It will take effective preventive approaches and greater participation of young people in the development of solutions.

Sybille Gloor Erwachsen

“Strengthening the mental health of children, young people and young adults requires needs-based and sustainable solutions. These can only be developed through dialog between academics, politicians and young people.”

Sybille Gloor, Child Rights Advocacy, UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein

What are the causes of the longstanding decline in mental health? How can young people’s resources and life skills be strengthened? How can their creativity and ideas be harnessed? What projects and programs have already proven to be successful? How can young people be supported in coping with mental health challenges? How can risk factors be minimized and protective factors maximized? What is missing in mental health provision?

At this event, these and other questions will be discussed together with young people and possible answers developed with academics, administrators and politicians.

You can register online on the Public Health Switzerland website (content in German and French only). Please also note the terms of participation posted there.
